"When the history books are written, they will tell of an uprising that happened among Miami’s renter class against the slumlords. They organized tenant unions in every slum building, and then through their collective efforts, including rent-strikes, media blitzes and legal action, forced them to part with their properties and place it in the residents’ control. This happened with building after building, each victory providing momentum for the next, until eventually, the grassroots residents had built enough of a base, and enough assets, to shift the dynamics of power on housing decisions in Miami. Moreover, the financial advantage the movement now possessed allowed them to create America’s first ecosystem of new economy initiatives, with residents living in affordable housing cooperatives and land trusts, working at worker-owned cooperative businesses, and engaging in sustainable and regenerative consumption. This progressed until the system of housing itself was removed entirely from the speculative market and was completely decommodified. In every sense of the word, Miami had made housing a human right."
